Coleshill Town 1-0 Bourne Town
Coleshill Town sponsored by Oakplas, secured a deserved three points at Pack Meadow on Saturday afternoon, overcoming Bourne Town 1-0 in a hard-fought contest that saw the Colemen move above their opponents in the league standings.
The afternoon began in unfortunate fashion for the hosts. Just two minutes into the match, Dan Brookes suffered a nasty-looking injury following what appeared to be an innocuous challenge. The sight of Brookes receiving treatment was a concern for everyone inside Pack Meadow, and the entire Coleshill Town family will be hoping for positive news on his recovery.
Despite the early setback, the Colemen quickly found their rhythm and took control of the opening half. Coleshill played with purpose and intent, repeatedly testing the Bourne defence with a series of dangerous attacks.
The chances continued to come, with efforts crashing back off the post and others narrowly missing the target. On another day, the hosts could easily have found themselves three or four goals to the good before the break. However, despite their dominance and attacking threat, the breakthrough would not come and the sides went into half-time level at 0-0.
The second half began in much the same fashion, with Coleshill immediately on the front foot. Just two minutes after the restart, a free-kick from the edge of the area looked destined for the corner, only for the Bourne goalkeeper to produce an excellent save, diving smartly to his right.
The pressure continued to build and midway through the half Coleshill enjoyed another spell of attacking dominance. Several promising opportunities came and went before Dan Gyasi was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.
Harry Sweeney's resulting free-kick was initially defended, but as the Colemen recycled possession and launched another attack, a challenge inside the box resulted in a penalty being awarded.
Will Marshall stepped up looking to give Coleshill the lead, but his effort to the goalkeeper's left was kept out by a fine save, ensuring the deadlock remained intact.
To their credit, the Colemen refused to let their heads drop and continued to push forward in search of the breakthrough their performance deserved. It finally arrived when a dangerous cross into the penalty area evaded almost everyone in a crowded box. At the back post, Harry Sweeney reacted quickest, stooping low to guide a superb header into the net and send the home supporters into celebration as Coleshill deservedly took a 1-0 lead.
With the visitors now chasing the game, Bourne began to commit more players forward and created several opportunities of their own. However, Coleshill's defence stood firm throughout. Every player played their part, working tirelessly to track back, cover for teammates and protect the advantage.
A disciplined and determined defensive performance ensured there would be no late drama as the Colemen saw out the remaining minutes to claim a valuable three points.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 1-0 victory for Coleshill Town, a result that sees them leapfrog Bourne Town in the league table and continue their positive momentum.
Attention now quickly turns to Monday, when the Colemen return to Pack Meadow to welcome local rivals Sutton Coldfield Town in what promises to be another exciting encounter.
